- What do women want when they speak about issues with men? What can men do when responding to a woman instead of offering suggestions to fix the issues? Many men grow up believing love means solving problems. If something is broken, you fix it. If someone is hurting, you remove the pain. But many women are not primarily asking for solutions when they talk about emotional issues. Often, they are asking for connection, understanding, safety, and emotional presence. From a conservative Christian psychologist’s perspective, this reflects the different ways men and women were designed to communicate and bond. Men often bond through action and shared goals. Women often bond through emotional conversation and relational connection. Many women learned this pattern in childhood. A little girl who felt ignored emotionally may grow into a woman who deeply craves someone to truly listen. If she grew up with criticism, emotional distance, rejection, or instability, she may seek reassurance through conversation. Some women learned that talking about emotions was the only way to feel close to others. Others may have experienced fathers who immediately dismissed feelings or solved problems without understanding their hearts first.3
